Formed in New York at the end of the 90's, the Strokes brought a self assured swagger to the indie rock scene badly in need of a kick start and they delivered with their 2001 debut album, Is This It. They may have been from New York but it was the British music press that took them to their hearts and sold them to the indie kids, who lapped them up.
Spiky guitars, a chugging backbeat and sing-along vocals twisted around apathy, sadness and rebellion with equal measures of love. It was the prefect record at the perfect time that lit the touch paper for so many of todays pop rock bands, but this was the first.
